Cleaner Production (Pollution Prevention)in China -- What's New

Web Site Coverage Broadened
This web site began in 1998 as a project site for the China-Canada Cooperation Project in Cleaner Production. (CCCPCP) In August 2000 the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) (formerly SETC) decided to expand the coverage of both the English and Chinese language web sites to cover Cleaner Production/Pollution Prevention in China. In 2003 the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) took over responsibility for Cleaner Production/Pollution Prevention efforts in China. The site will be continuously updated.

The Chinese language web site promotes cleaner production within China and provides information and assistance for factories or other organizations implementing cleaner production. The English language web site provides information on China's Cleaner Production programme, as well as information on Cleaner Production topics and English language links to relevant sites.

Sept. 13, 2002	On June 29, 2002, the National People's Congress approved new and comprehensive cleaner production legislation, the Cleaner Production Promotion Law. This new law is the most significant of a number of initiatives the Chinese government has taken to establish Cleaner Production nationwide as one of China's key strategies for sustainable development. It is unprecedented, being the first national law in the world to establish Cleaner Production as a national policy, and to lay out a strategy for its promotion and implementation. This law will become effective in January 2003.
