Eco-efficiency (EE) is a broad term, encompassing the principles of sustainable development, cleaner production, environmental management and more - but using all these principles to be more efficient and productive. EE's goal is to reduce 'environmental pressure per unit' produced and consumed. By reducing the resources required for goods and services, businesses can achieve a competitive advantage.
According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, a company wanting to become eco-efficient should strive to:
