Cleaner Production Tools -- Environmental Audits

[ Description | Links | Manuals ]

Description

An Environmental Audit (EA) assesses environmental impact and identifies problem areas. An EA may be conducted by a city, a company, a factory or other organization. The audit may be performed by an independent consultant or the organization itself.

Before any organization adopts principles of Cleaner Production, it should perform an EA. The audit attempts to  identify all the environmental
impacts made by the organization so that changes to processes and
practices can be assessed and implemented. It may also assess the level of compliance to relevant legislation and guidelines such as ISO 14000, and document past activities at a location (to assess contamination.)

After making changes, environmental impacts can be re-assessed to document progress. In some jurisdictions, environmental audits are also being used as a means of limiting liability.

There are a number of professional organizations offering certification of Environmental Auditors.
