Company Information
Zhongce Beijing Beer Company (ZBBC)
is located in the eastern industrial zone of Beijing city with a floor area of
16,000 square meters. There are 1,550 employees in the ZBBC, among them
technical staff is 310. The main products are 11 degree and 12degree
bottled, barrelled and canned, Beijing Beer. The
production capacity is 120,000 tons beer per year.
Background
The water consumption and COD emission of per ton beer are higher than corresponding figures in the other breweries, the same case for the beer loss. The main cause of the beer loss and raw materials loss is the diatomite filtration. To solve this problem, the company, as one demonstration enterprise of the China Technical Assistance Project of the World Bank, has taken part in the cleaner production audit since December, 1992.

Cleaner production
The company set up a cleaner production audit team headed by the company manager and the chief engineer. The audit team has evaluated the production and wastes generation situation in the company and 27 options have been generated, 15 options of them have been implemented (until the end of November, 1993).
The obvious benefits has been achieved, mainly as follows:
a. The output of barrelled and canned beer increased by 3,200 tons comparing with the same period in last year with economic benefits 3.66 million RMB and the COD emission reduction by 35.2 tons have been achieved by implementing the options of production optimization.
b. The economic benefits of 1.033 million RMB and COD emission reduction by 220.5 tons have been achieved by implementing the options of raw materials saving and wastes reduction.
c. The COD reduced by 102 tons by implementing cleaner production technology. The total COD reduction is 357 tons and economic benefits are 3.79 million RMB summed up benefits above in 1993.

Enabling technology
The diatomite filter is used to filtrate beer with higher beer loss and diatomite consumption. The capacity of the diatomite filter is not enough for full production activity. The option of installation of a beer centrifuge is proposed by the audit team after evaluating three different filtration technologies.
