(Cleaner Production Case Study: Saving Water, Energy and Raw Materials in a Distillery)

[ Description | Contact | Links ]

Description

Yantai Second Distillery, located in the Fushan District, Yantai City, is a state-owned edible alcohol producer and has been in operation since 1958. (Yantai is on the coast, near the Bohai Sea.) The distillery has 510 employees and occupies a floor area of 66,000 square meters. The fixed assets are worth 12.725 million RMB. The main products include four series of grain liquors with more than 20 varieties and dried sweet potato alcohol. Some products, under trademarks of Luhuang, Bawei, Yanting and Qiquan Temple, have won several prizes.

Background

In 1980s the anaerobic - aerobic treatment plant for the waste liquid of sweet potato distillation was set up. Because the distillery has paid more attention to the pollution end-of-pipe control only in the past, the management and control of pollutant generation while producing has been ignored and so has the harmonic development of the pollution prevention and the production activity.

Cleaner production

The distillery set up a cleaner production audit team which was headed by the company manager Mr. Hao Jiang in the beginning of 1994. The employees were encouraged to take part in the cleaner production activity. The current situation of pollution generation of the company was investigated and the audit focus was selected, 27 cleaner production options were generated. After implementing 13 options, the pollution generation has been reduced greatly and the consumption of dried sweet potato for per ton of alcohol production has been lowered to 3.09 tons from 3.8 tons. The short term objectives of pollution prevention and some economic benefits have been achieved.

Table 1 Results of implementing options

Investments: 68,500 RMB Economic benefits:

5.628 million RMB per year

Coal saving: 810 tons per year Electricity saving: 132,840 kWh per year
Water saving: 98,020 tons per year Materials saving: 3,564 tons per year
Slag reduction: 248 tons per year Waste liquid reduction: 20,200 tons per year

Enabling technology

1. Differential distillation

In the technology of differential distillation, the towers of a distillation system operate at different pressure condition and the steam is used as heating resource for the first tower operating under the positive pressure condition and the distilled product (steam phase) at the top of the tower is used as heating resource for the next tower operating under the less pressure condition before being condensed. In this way, not only the steam doesn't need for the tower operating under the lower pressure condition but also the cooling water doesn't need to condense the product steam at the top of the tower operating under the positive pressure condition.

2. Continuous fermentation

3. Replacement of boiler and generating power using methane.

Advantages

According to the feasibility study of 3 cleaner production technologies above, the expecting benefits after implementing them are as follows:

  tons/year
Grain saving: 1,950
Steam saving:  10,420
Water saving: 108,500
Coal (counted as standard): 955
Electricity saving: 807,5 MWh/year
Waste water reduction:  8,200
Waste liquid of distillation: 10,000
Slag reduction: 317.5
Dust generation: 17 %

Economic Benefits

Sum of the investments (3 CP technologies mentioned above) 10.148 million RMB
Annual extra cash flow 4.6946 million RMB
Payback period: 2. 2 years
Internal rate of return 44%
Net present value (NPV) 18.7003 million RMB
(life period = 10 years and the return rate of investment = 10%)
