The Lun Nan (Lunnan) Oilfield -- Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

According to a 2000 report, oilfields in Xinjiang have oil deposits estimated at 20.86 billion tons and natural gas deposits estimated at 10.3 trillion cubic meters. The region accounts for 30 percent and 34 percent of the nation's on-land crude oil and natural gas resources, respectively. Both the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the China National Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) have made major investments in Xinjiang.
In 2002, the Lunnan Oil Field was chosen as a Cleaner Production Demonstration site for the crude oil extraction sector by the China-Canada Cooperation Project in Cleaner Production. The oilfield is located at the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert and is part of the Tarim Basin, a huge oil and natural gas reserve. This demonstration will include a Cleaner Production audit and an assessment of CP opportunities in the crude oil extraction sector.
