The Jinchuan Non-Ferrous Metal Corporation was selected as a demonstration site for the application of cleaner production principles in the non-ferrous metals sector in 2002. This demonstration project is a part of the China-Canada Cooperation Project in Cleaner Production. The province of Gansu has more than 60 types of minerals, the best-known being nickel, copper, lead and zinc. The city of Jinchang is the country's leading nickel producer. Jinchuan Group Ltd is situated in Jinchang, an industrial city, and in the east of the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, China. The terrain of the mine is flat, and the altitude is between 1500 and 1800 meters. The climate in Jinchang is typical of temperate zone and continental climate. The city lies 22 kilometers south of Lanxin railway, part of Europe and Asia Continental Bridge, with railways in the operating area connected to the Lanxin railway, so Jinchuan Group Ltd enjoys very convenient transportation facilities. Jinchuan Group Ltd is the largest producer of nickel,
cobalt and platinum group metals in China, as well as a large integrated enterprise combined with mining, dressing, smelting & refining and chemical engineering. It produces nickel, copper, cobalt, precious metals and also some chemicals such as sulfuric acid, caustic soda, liquid chorine, hydrochloric acid and sodium sulfite, together with some further processed nonferrous metals products, The output of nickel and platinum group metals respectively accounts for more than 88% and 90% of the total in China, so Jinchuan Group Ltd is named the Nickel City of China.
