Description

Background

The end-of-pipe pollution control technology has been implemented by the BGEF since the end of 1970s. The facilities of waste water and waste gas treatment has cost 1 million RMB and annual operation charge of 0. 4 million RMB. The factory economic efficiency has been lowered by such heavy environmental burdens.

Cleaner production

The BGEF was one of the first batch pilot enterprises for cleaner production in 1993 and auditing was carried out with the help of domestic and foreign experts, from UNEP, NEAP, the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau and the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences. The double side and multi - side PCB manufacture line was selected as an audit focus at the pre - assessment stage. The audit team engaged in pollution investigation, carried out material balance, assessment and technical and economic feasibility analysis and generated 14 options for pollution prevention and minimization of copper concentration in the waste water. 12 options, among which 4 options of raw materials substitution, 4 option of process optimization and 4 options of good housekeeping, have been implemented.

Enabling technology

  1. Electroplating Pb/Sn by using ammo-sulphonate solution instead of fluorborate solution;

  2. Recycling the spent solution;

  3. Using counter - flow and spraying rinse technology;

  4. Removing resin residue by using potassium permanganate solution instead of chromate and sulphuric acid;

  5. Using electroless copper solution without any chelates

Advantages

  • Improving the quality of products and reducing the number of rejects;

  • Extending the life of the electrolytic solution by operation optimization;

  • Lowering the production cost by reduced water consumption remarkably;

  • Lowering the copper concentration in the waste water discharge;

  • Lowering the cost of end - of - pipe treatment for waste water;

  • Recycling some materials.

According to the statistics, some figures as follows;

  • The consumption of metal materials (copper laminates and anode, etc. has decreased by 9. 4 %;

  • Water consumption reduced by 21 % and the waste water generation reduced by 5,300 tons/year;

  • The amount of copper contained in waste water is decreased by 139 kg;

  • The economic benefits by the items above is 0.3 million RMB annually.

Economic Benefits
  Option 1 Option 2
Capital investment, RMB 102,900 640,000
Cost savings per year, RMB 63,000 291,000
Payback period, year 2.3 3.8
Internal rate of return, % 14.08 16.01

Company Information

Beijing General Electroplating Factory is the biggest electroplating enterprise and one of the main manufacturers of printed circuit board (PCB) in China. The BGEF has been put into operation since 1958 and is located at the east of Beijing city. The BGEF is a comprehensive electroplating factory with different metal electroplating (such as copper, nickel, chromium, zinc, silver and etc.), aluminum anodizing, PCB manufacture (single - side, double side and multi - side PCBS) and electroplating equipment manufacture.

There are 820 employees in the factory, among them 78 persons are engineering technicians.
