Description

UNEP coined the term 'Cleaner Production' in September 1990. The objectives of UNEP's Cleaner Production activities are:

  • To increase worldwide awareness of the preventive environmental protection strategy embodied in cleaner production; and

  • To help government and industry develop cleaner production programmes and activities that will expand the adoption of cleaner production know-how and management approaches.

Training and Technical Assistance

Activities focus on promoting self-sustaining cleaner production programmes in developing countries. Building capacity within an organization, governmental or private sector, is the most effective way to ensure that the cleaner production philosophy is implemented. The China Cleaner Production Programme, developed in cooperation with UNEP TIE (Technology, Industry and Economics) and partly funded by the World Bank, is an outcome of this programme.

Publications

UNEP's publications include: "Cleaner Production in China: A Story of Successful Cooperation" (jointly produced with the Chinese National Environmental Protection Agency and the World Bank). The Cleaner Production Newsletter, published twice a year as a supplement to the Industry and Environment Review, is available in Chinese as well as several other languages.

Implementing CP: The National Cleaner Production Centres Programme (NCPC)

UNIDO and UNEP jointly launched the NCPC Programme in approximately 20 countries (including China) over a five year period. The NCPCs provide technical information and advice, demonstrations of CP techniques, and training. The centres are managed by experienced country nationals and hosted preferably in existing non-governmental organizations. Support for the project has  come from the governments of Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Switzerland and UNEP. International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC)

IETC promotes the use of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) to address urban environmental problems, such as sewage, air pollution, solid waste and noise, and the management of freshwater basins to developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The demonstration projects "Sustainable Shenyang" and "Sustainable Wuhan" and a diagnostic study for Lake Erhai and Xier River Basins, in Yunnan Province, are supported by UNEP IETC.
