Description

China rejoined the World Bank in May 1980. The Bank made its first loan to China in 1981 in support of the development of Chinese universities. Over the years, the relationship between China and the World Bank Group has grown into a mature and significant partnership for development. World Bank-supported projects can be found in all the major sectors of the economy and most of the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China. China is one of the Bank's best performing member countries in terms of project implementation.

The current World Bank Group's assistance strategy is designed to assist China to meet its objectives in the four key areas of the country's development agenda:

  1. public sector management

  2. transitions to a socialist market economy

  3. rural development (includes managing natural resources and protecting the environment)

  4. urban development (includes protecting the urban environment)

The World Bank's initiative, New Ideas in Pollution Regulation (NIPR), is the main instrument in China for implementing cleaner production. (See also the full list of NIPR China projects and research papers.) The NIPR's Development Research Group has worked closely with SEPA and other Chinese environmental agencies to a analyze information on relationships linking environmental regulatory actions, factory-level environmental performance, and environmental quality. A number of  policy research papers, reports and datasets for modeling pollution problems in China have been produced and made available on line.
