Tianjin

Description

The city of Tianjin is the third largest industrial city in China. It is located near the Bohai Gulf, where the Haihe River flows into the ocean. The Port of Tianjin, based downstream at Tangu, is the largest port in northern China. This city, like Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, is administered by the State Council.

Tianjin has a population of around 10 million people. The major industries in Tianjin include the automobile industry, the machinery and electronic industry, the offshore petro-chemical industry and the metallurgical industry. Industries being developed include electronic information, new energy and materials, biological technology and modern medicine and environmental protection.

Tianjin City is participating in environmental protection through the blue-sky and blue-water programs, noise pollution control, industrial pollution prevention and control, and ecological greening projects. Its major modern industrial area, Tainjin Economic Development  Area, received ISO14000 certification in May 2001.
