Description

The ancient city of Suzhou is situated at the intersection of two major economic belts -- the Coastal Economic Belt and Yangtze River Economic Belt. It lies about halfway between Shanghai and Lake Tai. Under the jurisdiction of Suzhou Municipality are six counties: Changshu, Zhangjiagang, Kunshan, Taicang, Wujiang and Wu County. Suzhou covers an area of 8488 square km with a population of 5.71 million. The city itself includes many water lanes and canals.

Suzhou is famous for its 2500 year history and culture, as well as its charming landscape. Since the opening up and reform of China, the Suzhou economy has forged rapidly ahead. Development in Suzhou included the Suzhou Industrial Park, a model for industrial and residential eco-efficient development. In 1999, the SIP received its ISO 14000 certification - the first urban district in China to do so. Suzhou is also making major investments in preventing the amount of pollution that reaches Lake Tai from all industrial and residential sources.

Suzhou's winning sustainable development strategy includes these key factors:

  1. Establishing a comprehensive environmental protection program

  2. Dividing the city function by function

  3. The "Three Strategies": invigorating city through science and education, fanning out from outside to inside, and sustainable development

  4. Adjusting economic structures to optimize productivity

  5. Strengthening environmental legislation

  6. Establishing environmental protection investment mechanisms related to social economic development

  7. Promoting the work of ISO14000 consistently
