Description

Shanghai, China's largest city, is located on the east China coast south of the Yangtze river. It is China's biggest and busiest port, and most important industrial and commercial center. About 13 million people live in Shanghai.

Air pollution, particularly from SO2, is a major problem in Shanghai. Most of the pollution comes from coal-burning smoke and vehicle emissions. Recent measures to improve air quality include reducing the sulfur content of coal and the use of alternate fuels. The Shanghai area has an abundant surface water supply, but because of the large population and extensive economic development, there are also serious problems with surface water pollution. The major industrial source of water pollution is the chemical industry.

A large part of Shanghai's environmental problem has come from the location of major industries in the heart of the city. In recent years, the municipal government has encouraged polluting factories to move to less central locations (for example, Pudong) and upgrade their pollution control ability at that time.
