[ Description | Projects | Factories | Maps | Organizations | Links ] Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu Province, in central China. It has a population of nearly 3 million. The Yellow River (Huang He) flows through Lanzhou, in a long narrow river valley. Lanzhou is highly industrialized, although it is not as prosperous as some of China's other major cities. Its major industries include petrochemicals and oil refineries. There is very little wind in this area, which contributes to severe air pollution, especially in winter. The area is also rather dry, and sandstorms can occur. Lanzhou has a "Blue Sky Initiative" to combat air pollution, which focuses on tree planting and the use of alternate fuels, as well as cleaner coal burning. Also, more sewage treatment facilities are planned to prevent the further deterioration of the Yellow River.
