[ Description | Projects | Factories | Maps | Organizations | Links ] Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, and it has a population of around 3.5 million people, including its satellite communities. It is the economic, cultural and political center of Yunnan province, which is in the south-east of China, bordering on Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. Kunming is called the "Spring City" because of its pleasant climate. The city is on the northern edge of Lake Dian Chi, which is one of the three lakes targeted for special environmental attention. While air pollution is not too bad in Kunming (compared to other major Chinese cities) water pollution is a major problem. The lake used to provide the city's drinking water, but it is no longer clean enough. Agriculture, especially tobacco farming, is important in the region. Kunming's industries include machinery, building materials, metallurgy, chemicals, textiles and food processing. Water pollution in the area comes from many sources, including industrial waste, agricultural runoff and urban sewage. Efforts to clean up wastewater before it enters the lake have been started, but it may take years before real improvement is made.
