[ Description | Projects | Factories | Maps | Organizations | Links ] Benxi is located in the eastern mountainous region of Liaoning Province. It is an important industrial raw material base of iron and steel, coal, building materials and chemical products. About 1.5 million people live in Benxi. During the past decades, Benxi has undergone drastic economic, social, and urban development, becoming one of the 17 largest cities in China. Benxi was once labeled "the city invisible by satellite" due to its serious industrial pollution. Its rapid industrial expansion resulted in the overexploitation of natural resources and subsequent ecological destruction. Its main water source, the Taizi River, was very polluted. In 1994, in accordance with China's Agenda 21, Benxi adopted Benxi's Agenda 21 and began a project entitled Sustainable Development through Industrial Transformation and Cleaner Production. Since then, Benxi has made progress in implementing cleaner production (as well as other environmental protection programs) as a means to clean up the local environment, and both air and water pollution have decreased.
