Description

Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is the center of politics, culture and international exchanges and a modern metropolis full of vitality. It is China's second largest city (after Shanghai) - over 14 million people live in Beijing.

Beijing is a major industrial area, with a vast complex of textile mills, iron- and steelworks, railroad repair shops, machine shops, chemical plants, and factories manufacturing heavy machinery, electronic equipment, locomotives, plastics, synthetic fibers, and rolling stock. These industries form a ring around the city. Beijing also has a sizable petrochemical industry.

In recent years, air pollution has become a major problem in Beijing. As in most Chinese cities, coal is the predominant fuel. However, Beijing is serious about reducing pollution - according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB), the average concentration of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and total suspended particulates (TSP) is declining.

Beijing's water resources are limited, and cleaner production techniques are being used - along with other conservation methods and new water resource development - to ease water shortages. Beijing is also including more green space in areas of the city that are being re-developed.

Cleaner production options were implemented in 26 pilot companies before end of 1995 and another 26 companies are on demonstration programme set by Beijing EPA in 1996-97, covering brewing, chemical, pulp and paper, machinery, printing and dyeing, electronic, electroplating, pharmaceutical and telecommunication sectors.

The Olympic Movement's Agenda 21 is Beijing's guideline for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games. Hosting of the Games in Beijing will serve as a catalyst for environmental improvement and help promote sustainable development in Beijing and China.
